Crowns & Bridges
If you’ve been dealing with a damaged tooth or missing teeth, you know how challenging this situation can be. Damaged teeth can be painful, and you might find yourself unable to enjoy the fresh, healthy, crunchy foods you used to love. Damaged and missing teeth can also have an impact on your self-esteem and self-confidence. We live in a society where first impressions mean everything, and if you don’t feel confident when you smile, others might get the wrong idea about you.
At Waterloo Dental Associates, we want to help you smile again with confidence. Using restorative techniques like crowns and bridges, we can repair your damaged teeth and replace any teeth that are missing. Your smile will be complete, your oral health will improve, and life will be more enjoyable.
What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown, which is sometimes referred to as a “cap,” is a tooth-shaped restoration that is designed to fit right over the top of your own tooth. Once the crown is cemented into place, it conceals your tooth and protects it from further damage. Thanks to the modern materials used to make crowns today, Dr. Aldrich can craft a crown that looks just like one of your own natural teeth, allowing your new restoration to blend in perfectly.
What Is a Dental Bridge?
Dental bridges use crowns placed on the adjacent teeth (or on dental implants) to suspend one or more artificial teeth in the space where your missing tooth used to be. This completes your smile, restores the ability to chew, and prevents your other teeth from “drifting” into the space left by the missing tooth. This, in turn, prevents additional future problems that are caused by a misaligned bite.
How Do I Get a Crown or a Bridge?
If you have damaged or missing teeth, the first step is to call our Waterloo dental office and schedule an appointment with Dr. Aldrich. Dr. Aldrich will perform a thorough examination and discuss your options, taking factors like your insurance coverage and your budget into account.
If both you and Dr. Aldrich agree that a crown or bridge is the right option for you, we’ll get started! At your first appointment, Dr. Aldrich will shape your tooth (or teeth) to prepare for the crown or crowns. This is done to allow the crown to fit properly among your other teeth without putting extra pressure on the adjacent teeth or altering your bite.
The next step will be to take photos and impressions, which will be sent to a dental lab we trust, along with specific instructions for customizing your new restorations. You’ll be fitted with a temporary restoration to protect the shaped teeth.
When your restorations are back from the lab, we’ll call you back to our office to remove the temporary restoration and place your permanent restorations. After we check the fit and make sure that you are comfortable, you’ll be all set!
We can also create crowns that make a personal statement and enhance your smile. For an example, please see the "dental tattoo" that we created for one of our patients, who wanted to display her UNI Panther pride! While white crowns on the norm, it can be fun to show off a bit of personal flair!
We are so excited to now be offering same day crown service with our new CEREC Primescan! Imagine, these improvements to your smile in one day of treatment. For more information about the CEREC Primescan please click here.
